Students of Xavier College, Llandilo have played a basketball team made up of seminarians, priests and staff from the Diocese of Parramatta today. In a close encounter, the Diocesan team known as “Spiritus Sanctus” narrowly edged out  Xavier 19-16 in the friendly game.
The games are organised by Fr John Paul Escarlan, now Assistant Priest at St Patrick’s Cathedral Parish, Parramatta and also part of the Diocesan Vocations team. The games aim to build school and parish connections and engage students in the life of the Church. It is also a chance for students to meet seminarians, some of whom have come through Diocesan schools. One of the students at the College asked if the priests would be dressed in their cassocks when playing.
Fr John Paul says that it enables students to see priests and seminarians in a different light, “They may see priests visiting the school or at school masses from a distance but the games allow them to see us and see that we’re just like them.” Spiritus Sanctus will play Gilroy College, Castle Hill on Wednesday.
