In July 2020, Australian Catholic University’s (ACU) Faculty of Theology and Philosophy and the ACU Centre for Liturgy will welcome Rev. Professor Mark R. Francis CSV as a guest lecturer for a new masters-level unit called: THEL620 Special Studies in Theology: Liturgical Inculturation.

Liturgical inculturation is the process via which the Church’s liturgy can be adapted to the needs of different peoples and cultures. This unit will investigate the process, purposes and possibilities of liturgical inculturation today, both within mission contexts and in the complex, multicultural, ethnically and linguistically diverse contexts of the developed world. It will examine underlying ecclesial and anthropological assumptions about, and definitions of ‘culture’ and it will consider the inculturated nature of all liturgies as products of multiple cultural influences over the centuries. By studying examples of inculturated liturgies, this unit will explore how the interaction between liturgy and culture elicits changes in both parties to the liturgical inculturation dialogue and how the ongoing organic development of the liturgy influences the liturgy’s continuing relevance in the world.
