The Choir of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta will lead Tenebrae at St Patrick’s Cathedral tonight.

Tenebrae – the Latin word for ‘darkness’ or ‘shadows’, has for centuries been applied to the combined Offices of Matins and Lauds on the last three days of Holy Week, which in medieval times came to be anticipated on the preceding evenings. This will be the first Tenebrae service that Bishop of Parramatta, Most Rev Vincent Long OFM Conv will preside over for the Diocese of Parramatta.

Features of this liturgy include the chanting of psalms and readings, with beautiful a cappella music sung by St. Patrick’s Cathedral choir. The liturgy will feature musical works by master composers such as Tomas Luis de Victoria and Ludovici da Viadana.

Commencing in the early evening, candles are gradually extinguished until the service concludes in darkness. One solitary candle the “Christ” candle remains burning, symbolising the light of Christ in our world.
