On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPwD), we are celebrating the achievements and contributions of people with disability.

Here at CatholicCare, our Garden Services employs 18 people with disability on the ‘garden crew’.

Our awesome garden crew (pictured) provide garden care, mowing and hedging services to commercial and residential customers.

Supported workers set employment goals and their skills are matched to their interests.

CatholicCare’s Senior Manager Community Care Jemima Parker said employment for people with disability gave a sense of purpose and provided opportunities for social relationships and income.

“As an employer, equality in employment opportunities is important — our supported employees are a highly valued part of my team,” Jemima said.

IDPwD is a United Nations observed day celebrated internationally. It aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions.

The theme for IDPwD 2021 is ‘Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world’.

IDPwD is an opportunity for us to make positive changes to the lives of the 4.4 million Australians with disability. Let’s all take this opportunity!
