In the following reflection, ministry partner Merilyn shares an update on the Diocese’s new Seniors Spirituality Program, which she has coordinated and led since July – offering special opportunities for older parishioners in the Diocese of Parramatta to deepen their faith.

The program has had a positive response since its launch in July, providing gentle formation, opportunities for community, and a range of experiences designed to deepen faith; from virtual pilgrimages to the Holy Land and journeys in the footsteps of Mary, to Advent reflections and day retreats.

Recently, older parishioners from Sacred Heart Parish, Mt Druitt South ventured by bus on a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Divine Mercy (Pauline Fathers) at Penrose Park. We had Mass in the Church, celebrated by Fr Andrew Robinson, former Parish Priest at St Bernadette’s Parish, Lalor Park; Deacon Roderick Pirotta, Pastoral Director at Sacred Heart, as well as Pauline Fathers and Brothers. The beauty of the Berrima church was overwhelming. Following Mass, an amazing lunch was had, as each parishioner generously brought a variety of dishes to share.

After lunch, we visited five multicultural shrines:

  • St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Chapel (Australian), where we prayed the first Luminous Mystery of the Rosary
  • Our Lady of Happy Voyage Chapel (Anglo-Indian), where we prayed the second Luminous Mystery of the Rosary
  • St Lorenzo Ruiz Chapel (Filipino), where we prayed the third Luminous Mystery of the Rosary
  • St Paul Chapel (Maltese) w,here we prayed the fourth Luminous Mystery of the Rosary
  • Our Lady of Le Vang (Vietnamese) and the Vietnamese Martyrs Chapel, where we prayed the fifth Luminous Mystery of the Rosary.

As we walked from one shrine to the next, we sang Ave Maria in contemplation of the breadth and mystery of our Catholic faith.

We then sat in small groups and discussed:

  • How can we use the fruits of the Holy Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) in our daily lives?
  • When do we find our belief in Jesus tested?
  • Are we prepared to stand up for our faith in all circumstances?
  • How do we share the glory of God and the good news with our family, friends and the community?
  • How will Advent be different for each one of us?

Parishioners shared their comments and reflections.

“I felt joy in my heart by the presence of the Holy Spirit,” said one.

“Being a senior, for me it is so much fun meeting with people and sharing our faith,” said another.

While another added they enjoyed the “excitement of being together.”
