Fr Renato Mario Alonso Paras, former Parish Priest of St Aidan’s Parish, Rooty Hill and first chaplain to the Filipino Catholic community in Australia, died on 26 October 2021 at Melva McDonald Lodge, Rooty Hill, aged 84.
A Pontifical concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial for Fr Renato will be celebrated on Thursday, 4 November at 11am at St Patrick’s Church, Allawah Street, Blacktown. There will be a viewing from 9.30am to 10.30am, which will be organised in accordance with health regulations.
As per current NSW Regulations for places of worship, both vaccinated and unvaccinated people may attend the church. Registration and the wearing of face masks are compulsory. Under the four square metre rule, 250 people are allowed at St Patrick’s Church, not including essential people.
Following the Mass, the cortege will proceed to Pinegrove Cemetery, Kington St, Minchinbury. As the cemetery is not a place of worship, Pinegrove’s COVID-19 Safety Plan requires that those attending the burial must be double vaccinated and must register with their QR code.
The Mass will be livestreamed and will be able to be seen on the Diocese of Parramatta Facebook page and the Mary Queen of the Family Parish, Blacktown Facebook page.
Ordained to the priesthood in 1967 in the Philippines, Fr Paras was incardinated to the Diocese of Parramatta in 1995. He served in several parishes in the Diocese before his retirement in 2011. Prior to that time, in 1981 he was certified by Cardinal James Freeman as the first Filipino Catholic Chaplain in Australia.
In your charity, please pray for the Repose of the Soul of Fr Renato and remember his family in your prayers.
