The annual Parramatta Diocesan Golf Day this year attracted 156 people and raised a record $12,000 to help support the San Miguel Family Centre at North Richmond. Every evening, the centre accommodates up to 15 families, including 40-50 children.
A service of yourtown, San Miguel offers families short-term accommodation and support, including case management, child and youth development, and assistance to secure stable, independent accommodation.
This wraparound support ensures the children of San Miguel are safe, and that they are able to engage in their education and in healthy recreational activities. San Miguel also offers outreach support to help families maintain stable, independent accommodation after they leave the centre.
San Miguel relies almost exclusively on fundraising efforts to enable this important work to continue. The funds raised by the Parramatta Diocesan Golf Day will support activities and programs for children at San Miguel. In particular, the funds will help provide resources for breakfast club, homework club, and school holiday activities such as arts, crafts, reading and sports. This donation will also ensure that children have the items needed for the 2017 school year, including backpacks, lunch boxes, school shoes and uniforms.
A cheque was presented to Ann Chandra, Specialist Accommodation Services Manager, and Jennifer Wood, Manager of the San Miguel Family Centre, at Freemans Reach on 28 October 2016.
Diocesan Golf Day organiser Ian Jordan said the success of the event held on 27 September 2016 at Richmond Golf Club was testament to the faith and spirit of the Catholic community coming together for a good cause. Foundation sponsors the Diocese of Parramatta Diocesan Development Fund and Catholic Church Insurance were acknowledged for their support and commitment over 30 continuous years.
Thanks to all those who contributed to the success of the golf day, the children of San Miguel will have the best possible start to the 2017 school year.
