Fr Fred Kammer SJ has devoted his life to social justice issues and is the author of Doing Faithjustice: An Introduction to Catholic Social Thought, first published in 1991. An authority of Catholic social thought and a trained lawyer, Fr Fred was director of the Jesuit Social Research Institute at Loyola University from 2009 to 2021, and from 2002 to 2008 was the Provincial Superior of the Jesuits of the New Orleans Province, where he was involved in the post-Hurricane Katrina recovery for the poor and needy.
In early May 2022, Fr Peter Smith from the Justice and Peace Office of the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney, and Fr Fred engaged in a great conversation of hope. In a wide-ranging discussion that took place at the Bethany Centre in the Diocese of Parramatta, they covered such vital topics as the importance of the global common good; how to help people form their consciences as they prepare to vote as Catholics; learning from difference; the critical role of young people as we address climate change, confronting racism and the timely issue of Ukraine and just war theory.
