Martin Scorsese: “My search for Jesus continues…”

3 June 2023

In a recent conversation with the director of La Civiltà Cattolica, Fr Antonio Spadaro SJ, American director Martin Scorsese, explained how Pope Francis’ call “show us Jesus” moved him.

The conversation between the two was in-depth and direct, with Scorsese making references to his films and sharing personal stories.

Talking about cinema, he spoke of his admiration for the immediacy of Jesus in Pasolini’s “The Gospel according to St. Matthew“, of the significance of “The Last Temptation of Christ” and of the next step in his own research on the figure of Jesus in the making of “Silence“.

Scorsese and Fr Antonio were speaking as part of the “The Global Esthetics of the Catholic Imagination” conference, organised by La Civiltà Cattolica in Rome from 25-27 May. The conference brought together both critical readers and creative artists from North America, South America, Africa, Europe, and East Asia who self-identify as Catholic or pay homage to Catholicism as a formative dimension of their artistry.
