Family, friends, school students and parishioners gathered at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, St Clair, on Monday 19 May 2025 to farewell Jamie Christopher Dowsett, a husband and father of four, cherished parishioner and devoted leader in the Church, who died on 9 May at the early age of 35.

The St Clair church was overflowing with mourners who had known Jamie through his steadfast involvement in parish life, his leadership in the Diocese of Parramatta, and his role as a friend, mentor, and servant-hearted man of God.

His funeral Mass was presided over by Fr Michael Belonio OSA (former Parish Priest when Jamie and family began their journey), Fr Percival Sevare OSA (current Parish Priest), Fr David Austin OSA, Fr Joseph Aresseril Jacob OSA (Saju) – who knew the family well – as well as Fr Andrew Fornal OP – a friend from the Nepean Deanery – and Fr Anthony Khoudair (school chaplain and Jamie’s spiritual director). Their close personal involvement was a moving testament to Jamie’s life – a life lived in faith, service, and deep love for God and others.

Fr Michael said in his homily, “We gather as a community in sorrow, yet also in profound gratitude for the life of Jamie Christopher Dowsett.”

“We stand here not just as mourners, but also as witnesses to the incredible love, faith and commitment that Jamie embodied throughout his life.”

Jamie’s ministry

Jamie was an active parishioner at St Clair-Erskine Park Parish, where he was a valued member of both the Parish Pastoral Council and the Men’s Business Ministry.

His leadership extended well beyond his local parish: he served as Chair of the Nepean Deanery Council and Chair of the Western Deanery Pastoral Council, working closely with clergy including Fr Andrew Fornal OP, Dean of Western Deanery, to support pastoral initiatives and strengthen parish life across the region.

His contributions were marked by a spirit of generosity, a deep commitment to the Church, and a sincere concern for the well-being of others. He was widely known and highly regarded throughout the Diocese for his energy, faith and leadership.

A man lovingly remembered

At only 35 years old, Jamie’s passing was sudden and heartbreaking. Fr Michael spoke movingly of Jamie’s deep faith, his journey to the Church, and his steadfast commitment to living a Christ-centred life.

“Jamie lived his life rooted in faith,” he said.

“Jamie did not simply attend [Mass], but instead he lived his faith… I would say he was a pillar in our community, a man who led not only with words, but definitely with actions – actions rooted in Christ’s love.”

Fr Michael described Jamie’s love for his wife Bianca and their four sons – Noah, Max, Marcus, and Perrin – as the heart of his vocation.

“Jamie embraced the joys and challenges of fatherhood with the same devotion he showed in his faith… his presence in his children’s lives, the teaching, the guiding and the loving was his greatest ministry.”

He also paid tribute to Jamie’s late father, noting the depth of grief experienced by the family in losing both father and son in less than two years.

“The grief of losing a father and now a beloved husband and son is definitely unimaginable, and yet, through faith and love, we can find consolation and strength,” he said.

The music reflected Jamie’s faith and love of worship, with hymns including The Lord is my Shepherd, Amazing Grace, and Stong and Constant, led by the Parish’s music ministry.

Jamie’s wife Bianca courageously offered words of remembrance.

“Jamie touched every person he came in contact with, in a meaningful way,” she said.

“He is, and always has been, that nice guy.”

Bianca painted a vivid picture of a man full of adventure, warmth, and purpose – from his Queensland childhood filled with crocodile tales and long-haul truck rides, to his discovery of faith that began with an internet search and led to deep, abiding involvement in parish life.

“God has always been pulling Jamie toward him through our life,” she said.

“We never knew at the time God was leading us… And of course, wherever Jamie went, I was right by his side.”

She reflected on his life as a husband, father, and best friend.

“He is the dad who loved video game time, board games and movie nights… Everything is family to Jamie, and that was where he found God, and that was his peace.”

May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in eternal peace.
