Free family day in Mount Druitt this Saturday to help break cycle of addiction

22 February 2024

For the fourth year running, the Baabayn Aboriginal Corporation in Emerton will host their free annual community day at Mount Druitt Pool this Saturday. The event is for everyone to come together and enjoy a family-friendly day, with free entertainment and food and to receive education and support for people coping with addiction to ice and other substances.

The “Mount Druitt Says NO to Ice and Other Substances” initiative started due to the concern about the drug epidemic in Western Sydney, especially amongst young people, and the subsequent damage it has on families and communities. The annual day is to bring the community together for a day of fun and to raise awareness and showcase the wide range of support available.

One of the organisers of the event, Br Lawrie McCane, spoke of the love and care the Baabayn Aboriginal elders had, and their desire to bring the Aboriginal community together. But they stress that the day is open to everyone.

“There have been hundreds of people attending each previous event. There have always been prominent Aboriginal artists and high-profile Aboriginal entertainment. This year we are excited to showcase Castlereagh Connection – a young band from Coonamble, aged 13 to 16, who appeared on Channel 7’s The Voice program, as well as the Tamworth Country Music Festival,” said Br Lawrie.

The event will be held at Mount Druitt Pool from 9am to 4.30pm this Saturday, 24 February. It includes free entry to the swimming pool, free sausage sizzle, free entertainment and activities all day, a free raffle with great prizes on offer, and free access to support services such as Aboriginal health groups.
