After having to conduct formation sessions for the health care ministry of the Church in the Diocese of Parramatta over Zoom during the pandemic-induced lockdown and social isolation, we are delighted to announce our first in-person face-to-face formation session for the health care ministry in the diocese.

This session, to be held on Saturday 21 May at St Patrick’s Cathedral Hall, Parramatta, focuses on the care of the sick and the dying child, including children of adolescent age. The focus will be on the approach to care and how to practise Gospel Compassion in a hospital setting. Presenter Abraham George, a Lay Chaplain, will share his experience of caring for sick and dying children at the Westmead Children’s Hospital, where he works alongside the hospital ministry of the Camillian Fathers.

This session will suit all those who are interested in the care of sick children in the Diocese. There will be an opportunity to share in small groups after the presentation to respond to any questions that participants may have.

This session is also part of a plan to introduce and develop a formation community for health care in the Diocese. There will be another session later in the year, and a Day of Recollection in November for those working in the Health Care ministry in the Diocese. Since the Health Care ministry in the Diocese has Sacramental, Pastoral and Professional dimensions, anybody working in these areas, or has experience working in these areas is welcome to come along.

It is intended that from 2023, this formation community will accompany our young people of the Diocese as they journey from High School to University studies, and then into a Health Care professional career. The community will provide mentorship and faith support as these young people develop their professional careers, mindful that in today’s world, there are many challenges and pressures facing the modern Catholic Health Care professional in Australian society.
