Nicholas Tadros, a 10-year-old boy from Western Sydney who survived a tragic helicopter accident on the Gold Coast in early January is now “responsive” following multiple surgeries in the past week.
Nicholas was one of three survivors when two Sea World sightseeing helicopters collided mid-air on Monday 2 January, killing four people, including his 36-year-old mother, Vanessa.
The family are parishioners of St Padre Pio Parish, Glenmore Park, where Nicholas is an altar server and received his Holy Communion. He attends Bethany Catholic Primary School, Glenmore Park.
According to an update credited to Nicholas’ father, Simon Tadros, shared on Facebook on Sunday, Nicholas has “been off life support now for a few days” and “his body has responded very well.”
“They have lowered his sedation medication at times to see if he is responsive, and he has woken up and able to respond to some questions with a nod or shake of the head,” the message reads.
“He is also able to hold my hand, but still no movement in his legs yet.
“Due to the pain and distress and anxiety levels they have had to sedate him again for now.
“He has a couple of surgeries next week…so pray that all goes well.”
The message concludes with Simon thanking everyone for their support, love and continuous prayers.
“God is listening to our prayers,” it says. “Please continue to pray for Nicholas, he has a long hard road ahead of him.”
On Saturday 7 January, parish priest Fr Suresh Kumar organised a special Mass to pray “for the recovery of Nicholas, for the repose of the soul of Vanessa and for the strength and support of Simon.”
“The family need our prayers, constantly – that is what they’re requesting, that is why we have come together,” Fr Suresh said during Mass, as reported by ABC News.
“Our child, Nicholas, is part of the school community as well. He’s a very nice boy, always joyful and smiling — that is why his classmates couldn’t fathom that this has happened.”
A funeral Mass for Vanessa took place this morning at St John the Beloved Maronite Catholic Church in Mt Druitt, with News.com.au reporting emotional scenes outside and during the service.
