Renowned US scripture scholar to speak in Sydney

The Marist Association of Saint Marcellin Champagnat has invited internationally renowned scripture scholar Professor Amy-Jill Levine to participate in a series of speaking engagements across Australia and New Zealand in May 2024.

Professor Levine will deliver a public lecture in Sydney on Monday 6 May entitled ‘Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi’ at Doltone House, Sydney from 9am to 2:30pm.

She will also deliver the 2024 Marian Lecture, which will be hosted in person and online this year in Sydney on Tuesday 7 May at Southern Cross Catholic College, Burwood from 6pm to 7.30pm. She will explore the Jewish context of Jesus and what message His words and actions have for us in the Church today.

Professor Levine is Rabbi Stanley M. Kessler Distinguished Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Hartford International University for Religion and Peace (Hartford, Connecticut, USA) and University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies Emerita and Mary Jane Werthan Professor of Jewish Studies Emerita, at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, USA.

Professor Levine is the first Jewish person to teach New Testament at Rome’s Pontifical Biblical Institute, an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the first winner of the Seelisberg Prize for Jewish-Christian Relations, and the 2023 recipient of the Hubert Walter Award for Reconciliation and Interfaith Cooperation from the Archbishop of Canterbury.

She will also be speaking at several other engagements across Australia and New Zealand including Brisbane on 13 May, Melbourne on 14 May and Auckland from 19-20 May, She will also visit and speak in the Archdiocese of Adelaide and Diocese of Sandhurst to leaders in Catholic Education amongst other meetings.

  • 7 May 2024 – Marian Lecture: The Jewish Jesus – Why It Matters to be held online or in person at Southern Cross Catholic College Burwood (6-7:30pm). This is a free event.
