The Diocese of Parramatta sadly mourns the passing of Fr Tim Hogan, one of our retired priests, who died peacefully on Sunday 6 July 2025. He was 81 years old.
Born on 16 May 1944 to John and Joan Hogan, Tim was the beloved twin brother of John (now deceased) and brother of Angela. He was baptised at Sacred Heart Church, Mosman, in the weeks following his birth – the beginning of his unique and enduring faith journey.
From birth, Fr Tim lived with the debilitating condition of cerebral palsy. While it shaped aspects of his life, it never stood in the way of the deep call God placed on his heart.
With quiet strength of faith, he embraced his vocation fully, becoming one of the few priests with a disability to serve in the Diocese of Parramatta.
During the 1980s and 1990s, the Church rules regarding men with disabilities being ordained were relaxed. Despite significant challenges, Fr Tim entered St Paul’s Seminary and was ordained to the diaconate on 3 April 1993. Later that year on 4 December, he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Bede Heather.
His ordination marked a significant moment not only for Tim, but for the wider Church – he was a trailblazer for inclusion, determination and faithful service.
His priestly ministry was marked by gentleness, resilience and pastoral care. Fr Tim served as Assistant Parish Priest at St Anthony of Padua, Toongabbie (1999–2007), and also ministered at St Joseph’s Parish Kingswood, Mary Queen of the Family Parish Blacktown, and in the Parramatta Tribunal Office.
An overflowing of condolence messages on social media from parishioners, clergy, community members and friends, particularly on Toongabbie Parish’s Facebook.
“Fr Tim was a wonderful priest.” – Rochelle.
“He was a beautiful soul, always included the young ones in the service.” Hilary.
“Rest In Peace Father. We will never forget your kindness.” Carmen.
Fr Tim was known for visiting the sick and homebound, and for his faithful presence at youth and parish events.
Those who knew him often remarked on his kindness and perseverance, and his love for exquisite classical music – especially the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, a man of profound Christian faith – mirroring the depth and harmony of his spirit.
In his later years, Fr Tim resided at Holy Spirit Aged Care Home in Croydon, where he was lovingly cared for.
