On 27 May 2025, the Good Shepherd Parish in Plumpton, Sydney, hosted a women’s interfaith food drive in support of the Mt Druitt-based charity House of Sakinah. Organised by the Western Sydney Women’s IntHERfaith Initiative (of the Columban Centre for Christian-Muslim Relations) in partnership with ACU, the Interfaith Commission Diocese of Parramatta, women parishioners of Plumpton Parish, and the Muslim sisters of House of Sakinah, the initiative aimed to foster unity and compassion among Christian and Muslim women, highlighting the shared values of charity and community service.
A Shared Mission of Compassion
The House of Sakinah is a charity organisation founded and run by Muslim women. They provide crisis accommodation for women and children fleeing domestic violence, food hampers for families in need or suffering homelessness, a breakfast program for a local primary school, and community programs for women migrants and refugees. Their work extends to empowering women. Their mission aligns closely with the Christian principles of charity and service to others. By hosting this food drive, the Good Shepherd Parish is not only providing food for women and families in crisis through House of Sakinah’s programs but also building bridges between faith communities, demonstrating that acts of kindness transcend religious boundaries.

The Importance of Interfaith Collaboration
Interfaith events like this food drive are crucial in promoting understanding and cooperation among different religious groups. In a world where divisions often overshadow commonalities, such initiatives serve as a reminder that shared values – such as compassion, generosity, and community – can unite individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Community Involvement and Support
The success of this event relied heavily on the participation of the local community. People were encouraged to contribute non-perishable food items. The women of House of Sakinah provided a talk on the work they do in the community as well as shared with the Christian parishioners about their faith, particularly the Hajj pilgrimage which is happening in early Juen. Four carloads of groceries were delivered to the House of Sakinah, ensuring that women and families in need receive essential support.
Looking Ahead
This food drive is more than just an act of charity; it is a step toward building a more inclusive and compassionate society. By coming together, Christian and Muslim women in Plumpton are setting an example for others to follow, showing that unity and understanding are achievable through collective action.
This initiative aligns with our Diocesan Pastoral Plan‘s objectives to be an inclusive and welcoming church and a church that reaches to the margins.
