Andrew Wilson, Head of Mission for Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD), has been awarded the prestigious Roma Mitchell Prize for his research into leadership in Catholic education.
The award recognises Andrew’s outstanding Minor Thesis, completed as part of a Graduate Certificate in Research Methodology through the Catholic Theological College in Melbourne, which he completed in 2024.
Reflecting on the 12-month thesis journey, Andrew said the project was both academically challenging and deeply rewarding.
His 16,000-word thesis, “Synodal Leadership in Catholic Education: A Study of Systemic Schools in the Parramatta Diocese,” delves into how Catholic school principals live out synodal leadership – an approach emphasised by Pope Francis and Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv, Bishop of Parramatta.
“I wanted to explore what synodality really looks like in everyday school leadership,” Andrew said. “It’s not just a theory – it’s a way of being, characterised by how we listen, include, make decisions and serve in our communities.”

Through conversations with six principals and a careful reading of key Church documents, Andrew identified five key themes of synodal leadership: baptism and missionary discipleship, humility, listening and discernment, service to communion, and the promotion of inclusivity and dialogue.
Though the principals didn’t always connect their leadership directly to their baptismal identity, Andrew observed a deep shared commitment to faith, collaboration, and Gospel values across the board.
The Roma Mitchell Prize was presented at the University of Divinity’s annual Mass and Dinner in Melbourne. While Andrew couldn’t attend in person, his supervisor, Dr Paul Sharkey, accepted the award on his behalf.
“The research affirms the commitment of our leaders to faith-led, inclusive schools and reinforces the importance of ongoing formation,” Andrew said. “I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to contribute to this growing conversation in Catholic education.”
