On 10 December 2022, the Diocese was blessed with the ordination of five permanent deacons – Deacons Charles Abela, David Dowling, Jerome D’Rozario, Batsirai Maringehosi and Alan Skofic – by Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv, Bishop of Parramatta, at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta.
Having served in their ministry for almost 18 months, Catholic Outlook spoke with Deacon Batsirai about what he has enjoyed in his ministry.
Deacon Batsirai is currently serving at Our Lady of the Way Parish, Emu Plains.
Catholic Outlook: What has been a highlight of your first year as a permanent deacon?
Deacon Batsirai Maringehosi: My main highlight was having an opportunity to meet and interact with young families during infant baptisms.
How has your parish placement been?
It was a learning experience, getting to know my new family and learning the art of preparing and giving a good homily.
How would the parishioners where you are serving describe you?
Very hard to say, but they are so lovely, understanding and accommodating. I sometimes feel they deserve more from me.
What has been something that you have learnt about yourself over your first year in ministry?
There is always this sense of inadequacy in me. You never get used to it, every Sunday is new and different. You are never certain if are doing the right thing before God and His people, you are never fully ready. Perhaps it’s a weakness I need to connect with Jesus Christ more. I need His wisdom, His guidance and strength in the ministry. Also, I am a slow starter. I probably need to come out of my shell a bit more.
How has your wife and family supported you through this first year of ministry?
While my children prefer to attend Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary, St Marys (my previous parish), my wife always attend with me at Our Lady of the Way, Emu Plains. Here and there, the children come to join me in Emu Plains. Finding time to pray together as a family united us and strengthens us.
What do you hope your second year of being a deacon will bring?
I am hoping to put more time and energy into evangelisation ad intra working and interacting with various parish groups particularly young families and youth.
