The Diocese of Parramatta’s Honours Committee is once again inviting everyone to recognise the selfless service of those who build up the Church, with nominations now open for the Papal, Civil and Diocesan Awards.
These awards celebrate all individuals – from parishioners, teachers, catechists, volunteers to liturgical ministers and more – whose lives reflect Christ’s call to serve the Church and wider community, often without recognition. They are a reminder that holiness is lived not only in extraordinary moments, but in daily acts of love, fidelity and service.
Last year, eleven parishioners across the Diocese were recognised for their dedication and faith, and Mr Kevin Sloan awarded the Benemerenti Medal, a Papal honour recognising exceptional service and dedication to the Catholic Church.

As Fr Peter Williams AM, Vicar General stated in his homily at the 2025 celebration, “We are honouring women and men from our own Diocese who, in their own way, have contributed to the life of their parish communities – often without fanfare.
“[The motivation] is not self-promotion or headlines but recognising that one’s vocation as a baptised Christian is to build up the Body of Christ.
“Our awardees inspire others to follow their own pathways of service. It’s all about building up the Body – and the Body is us. We are the Church, and we are all called to build up one another in faith,” he said.

At the heart of the awards is the Church’s long-standing tradition of honouring those who embody the Gospel. The Papal Honours system, granted by the Holy Father, recognises those who have demonstrated outstanding service, courage and unwavering commitment to God and the Church.
Alongside these are Diocesan Awards conferred by the Bishop of Parramatta, including the Diocesan Medal of Honour, the Citation of Merit for Youth and the Certificate of Recognition.
The Diocese also encourages nominations for national recognition through the Australian Honours system, affirming those whose service extends into the broader life of society.
These acknowledge the contributions of clergy, religious and lay faithful who support the mission of the Church in meaningful ways.

Anyone may nominate a person worthy of recognition. The focus is not on titles or length of service, but on the depth of a person’s contribution, the ways they have gone above and beyond in love, humility and dedication.
In a time when the Church continues to walk together in faith and mission, these awards offer an opportunity to give thanks for those who inspire others through their witness.
Take part in this process of gratitude by nominating those whose lives reflect the heart of Christ.
