In recognition of International Day of Older Persons (1 October), the Diocese of Parramatta celebrates the wisdom of age by inviting seniors to rediscover the joy of faith through its new Seniors Spirituality Program – a growing initiative that is already bringing communities together in reflection, connection, and inspiration.

About the program

At its heart, spiritual formation is about encountering God. Guided by the Holy Spirit, this encounter transforms hearts and deepens our understanding of mission. As the prophet Isaiah reminds us, Yet you, LORD, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter” (Isaiah 64:8).

The Seniors Spirituality Program was developed by former Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD) educator and leader, Merilyn Hancock, now Ministry Partner with the Mission Enhancement Team. Tailored for those aged 50 and over – including retirees, mobile seniors, and anyone seeking meaningful connection – the program offers a diverse menu of activities to nurture both faith and community.

“Our seniors carry so much wisdom and life experience, and this program creates space for that to be shared and nurtured,” Merilyn said.

“Whether through prayer, learning, or simple conversation, people are discovering fresh ways to encounter God and one another. What we’re seeing is not only deeper faith, but also renewed joy, purpose, and a real sense of belonging.”

A rich offering

From virtual pilgrimages and day retreats to book clubs and interfaith chats, there is something to spark curiosity, deepen faith, and strengthen community ties.

“The program incorporates human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral dimensions, offering a process that is intentional, ongoing, and reflective,” Merilyn explained.

“Participants grow in spiritual awareness, theological understanding, and capabilities for mission and service within the Church and the wider world.”

Beyond faith formation, the initiatives are designed to reduce social isolation and enhance wellbeing, giving seniors meaningful opportunities to connect, share, and support one another.

“Parishes are seizing the opportunity to bring people together in an intimate way,” Merilyn added. “When overseas travel isn’t possible, these virtual pilgrimages offer a similar experience right within the parish – a wonderful way to journey in faith and community.”

From pilgrimages to city excursions

This Jubilee year, the program offers a rich variety of experiences. Virtual pilgrimages take participants to the Holy Land, the footsteps of St Paul, and Marian shrines around the world – all from the comfort of home in sessions lasting two to four hours.

The Taste and See two–day course, delivered in fortnightly two-hour sessions, combines scripture study, contemplative prayer, and spiritual conversation. Other offerings include creative day retreats, reader groups, Laudato Si’ prayer sessions, interfaith initiatives, and ‘Meet the Mystics’ events.

Seasonal programs during Advent and Lent provide opportunities for deeper reflection and prayer. All in-person activities are supported by trained staff, including first aid staff, ensuring participants can take part with confidence.

Welcomed by parishes

Since its launch in mid-2025, she has been visiting parishes to listen, support, and tailor local formation needs. Many communities have already embraced the program, and sessions for 2026 are quickly filling up.

Among the most popular offerings are the virtual pilgrimages – enriched with photos and personal insights from sacred sites to real-life experiences. There is also an Interfaith Pilgrimage to St Marys Cathedral, the Great Synagogue and Gallipoli Mosque.

Through these initiatives, older parishioners are not only deepening their faith but also finding joy, connection, and a renewed sense of wellbeing, all while contributing vibrantly to parish life.

Merilyn is currently visiting parishes to discuss each parish’s needs and the program’s offerings. If you’d like to arrange a session in your parish or agency, please chat to your parish office in the first instance, or contact our MET. Learn more.

This initiative reflects the heart of the Diocesan Pastoral Plan, with its focus on prayer, mission, formation, dialogue, discernment, and community. By offering programs tailored for older persons, we are working to build an inclusive and welcoming Church – one of the plan’s key objectives. Visit Synodality to learn more.
