From Springwood to Mt Druitt, Parramatta to Castle Hill, Merrylands to Ryde, the real MVPs of the Diocese, our parish staff, gathered at Mount Schoenstatt, Mulgoa for the annual thanksgiving and Christmas luncheon in December last year.

Taking time out of their busy pre-Christmas schedules, over 70 staff members gathered to reflect on the Advent season, celebrate Christmas and congratulate those who achieved a major milestone in 2024.

Usually, the unsung heroes of each parish that do all the organising, the annual event is a time to give back to the parish administration staff and thank them for their work, support and care they provide for their priests and communities.

An important feature of the day is the Advent reflection, delivered by Fr Chris del Rosario, Parish Administrator of St Thomas Aquinas Parish Springwood and MC of St Patrick’s Cathedral.

Fr Chris’ reflection started with his admission that sometimes with so much on our plates leading up to Christmas we can all feel like the Grinch, waiting for it “to all be over”.

However, he drew inspiration from his first-ever trip to Rome last year, where he had the privilege of visiting the many beautiful basilicas, and one in particular brought him to tears.

In the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, is the Holy Crib that was commissioned by Pope Pius IX, and includes five pieces of wood from the manger where baby Jesus was laid.

Upon witnessing these relics, Fr Chris wept “because it is God Almighty that dwelled in that manger.”

“He is the Alpha and the Omega but allows himself to be vulnerable. He is absolutely dependent on us. He takes on our humanity.

“He is Our God who loves and absolutely adores you.”

Geoff Officer, Chief of Operations and Finance, gave thanks for the way in which our parish staff help bring the love of Christ to others.

“Your role in the parish is a unique position. You are called to be who you are to give the love of God to your people. It’s a challenging task,” he said.

“You see the good, and the troubling things.

“Thank you for the inspiration you give. Thank you for your smile every time we come and see you. You make our days just by the little things you do.”

Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv, celebrated Mass, and then distributed the certificates for those who celebrated milestones this year.

Organised by the Parish Support Team of Alfie Ramirez, Raimie Caramancion and Vanessa Garcia, the event has received praise from attendees who enjoy the opportunity to meet with their fellow colleagues in parishes and the Chancery, give thanks to God and sharing in the Christmas spirit.
