Vatican official to speak on Interreligious Dialogue in Parramatta

11 April 2024

The Columban Centre for Christian-Muslim Relations and the Diocese of Parramatta will welcome Cardinal Michael Fitzgerald M.Afr.OBE on Wednesday 8 May 2024 for a free public lecture entitled: “Interreligious Dialogue in our Day: 60 Years after Nostra Aetate” at St Patrick’s Cathedral Hall, Parramatta.

Cardinal Fitzgerald is the former head of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue and will talk on the developments inspired by Vatican II’s Nostra Aetate, the prophetic document which ushered in a new era in Catholic relations with people of other religions. The Church’s teaching and practice of inter-religious dialogue developed dramatically over these past 60 years but largely remains a “hidden treasure” which needs to be discovered, according to Fr Patrick McInerney, Director of the Columban Centre for Christian-Muslim Relations.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to hear one of the most senior and highly qualified church figures who enjoyed a long career in interfaith relations and rose to the highest position in the Vatican’s bureaucracy for interreligious dialogue. By training and early career, he is a scholar of Islam and Christian-Muslim relations. By long experience in the Curia, he is deeply attuned to interfaith relations with all religions in countries around the world,” said Fr McInerney.

Cardinal Fitzgerald will conduct a lecture, followed by a Q&A session. All are welcome to attend from 6pm. Light refreshments will be provided.

Places are limited. Please register here: parracatholic.org/cardinalfitzgerald
