This Saturday, take a fresh look at some of the tiniest creatures in God’s creation – and discover how much we depend on them.
Hosted by Earth Kin, an ecological awareness initiative of the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta, The Importance of Insects in the Australian Environment is a free online webinar exploring the vital – and often overlooked – work of insects in sustaining life. The event takes place via Zoom on Saturday 14 June from 9.00am to 10.30am (AEST).
“Insects may be small, but they are mighty,” said Professor Nigel Andrew, guest speaker and Chair of Science at Southern Cross University.
“From pollinating gum trees and wildflowers to breaking down waste and feeding birds and frogs, insects play critical roles in keeping ecosystems functioning. Without them, we’d be in serious trouble.”
Professor Andrew is one of Australia’s leading entomologists. A Fulbright Senior Scholar and recipient of the Ian Mackerras Medal, his research focuses on how native and introduced species respond to climate extremes and rapid environmental change. He also contributes to national ecological policy through scientific leadership roles.
The session will be facilitated by Sr Valda Dickenson rsm, founder of Earth Kin, with a mission to nurture spiritual and ecological awareness. She hoped the event would help people develop a deeper appreciation for the web of life – even the creepy-crawly parts.
“Every part, no matter how small, is part of the bigger ecosystem,” Sr Valda said.
“Life is so interconnected. If you damage one part – even an insect – you damage everything. And when you care for a small part, you care for all.”
Sr Valda chuckled recalling someone who confessed to squashing the odd cockroach.
“That’s okay,” she said. “It’s not about being perfect – it’s about intention, respect and learning to live more gently with creation.”
Mission at the heart
This webinar also reflects the Diocese of Parramatta’s Pastoral Plan and its call to be a Christ-centred Church that listens, serves, and goes out in mission. By learning to care for creation – even its smallest members – we grow in compassion and deepen our call to stewardship.
The event also coincides with the 10th anniversary of Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’ landmark encyclical on caring for our common home. It’s a fitting moment to pause, reflect, and renew our commitment to the world God has entrusted to us.
Whether you’re a gardener, teacher, student, or someone who’d like to feel just a bit more at peace with the bugs in your backyard – this is a fascinating, faith-rooted way to spend your Saturday morning.
