A Joyful Gathering with Bishop Vincent Long
On Friday 25 July, local permanent deacons and their wives joined Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv, Bishop of Parramatta, at Sacred Heart Parish, Mount Druitt South, for a special Mass and celebration of the diaconate on the feast of St Lawrence – the patron saint of deacons.
The gathering, held ahead of the liturgical feast on 10 August, has become a cherished tradition reflecting Bishop Vincent’s close bond with his deacons – whom he warmly describes as “the right hand of the bishop.”
About the Diaconate
The Catholic diaconate is a permanent order of ordained ministry, distinct from both the priesthood and the laity. Deacons are ministers of the Church, ordained by a bishop to serve in a variety of ways: proclaiming the Gospel, preaching, distributing the Eucharist, baptising new members, and assisting at weddings and funerals.
Beyond liturgical duties, deacons often serve in ministries such as social justice, prison outreach, and youth engagement, bringing the Church’s presence into the wider community.
Unlike priests, who are primarily responsible for celebrating the sacraments, deacons focus on service – in the Church and in daily life.
They may be married or single, supported by their families and parish communities, and undertake a comprehensive formation program before ordination.
A special gathering
In his homily, Bishop Vincent reflected on the historical and spiritual significance of the diaconate. He reminded those present that leadership is an essential part of the deacon’s vocation, not a modern innovation but a role deeply rooted in the Church’s tradition.
“Deacons were entrusted with the purse,” he noted, adding, “some even became Popes.”
His words were both affirming and inspiring, reinforcing the vital role deacons play in the life and mission of the Church.
The Mass was followed by a joyful meal at one of the region’s prominent RSL clubs, where deacons and their wives shared stories, laughter, and fellowship.
The atmosphere was one of unity and renewal, as the gathering strengthened the resolve of all present to continue serving with courage and compassion.
This special day not only honoured St Lawrence but also rekindled the spirit of service among the deacons of Parramatta, reminding them of their sacred calling and the unwavering support of their bishop.
