Catholic Care Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains recently partnered with White Lady Funerals, hosted a memorial service at Mamre House and Farm, Orchard Hills, bringing together nearly 20 families and friends who have lost a loved one, including those lost to suicide.

The morning of Thursday 11 September 2025 aligned with Suicide Prevention Week, providing an opportunity to raise awareness and offer comfort to those affected by suicide and unexpected loss.

The day included quiet reflection, prayer, and shared stories of remembrance. Attendees were also invited to plant rose bushes in the Garden of Remembrance, creating a tangible tribute to those who had died.

Lisa Malcher, Catholic Care’s Community Engagement and Development Coordinator, said the event highlighted the practical and emotional support Catholic Care offers to people navigating grief.

“This service recognises the deep suffering experienced by those who lose someone to suicide or tragic circumstances. It provides a space for families and friends to grieve together, to find comfort, and to know they are not alone,” Lisa said.

Care when it’s needed most

Counsellors and a Chaplain were on hand throughout the service, providing immediate support and guidance for anyone struggling. Deacon Roderick Pirotta, Pastoral Director from Sacred Heart Parish, Mt Druitt South, also attended, saying a few words and providing pastoral support to those present.

Their presence reflected Catholic Care’s broader commitment to walking with people during difficult times, not just at memorial events but through ongoing pastoral and counselling services.

More than a service

Catholic Care, the social welfare agency of the Catholic Church in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains, offers support for individuals and families dealing with loss through one-on-one counselling, group programs, and community initiatives.

Through these services, Catholic Care aims to help people navigate grief while providing a safe environment to share experiences and access professional guidance.

For those who attended on the day, the service underscored that grief does not need to be faced alone. Sharing memories, prayers, and moments of silence alongside others who understand loss offered connection and reassurance.
