Hundreds of members of the Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD) community came together on 14 November 2025 for a special memorial Mass celebrating the life and legacy of Greg Whitby, former Executive Director of Schools Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta (2006-2022).
The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv, Bishop of Parramatta, at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta, and was a heartfelt tribute to Greg’s decades of service to Catholic education and his deep commitment to transforming learning for young people. The event commenced with a moving procession of school banners, carried by student representatives from schools across the diocese. Their participation reflected the profound and enduring impact Greg had on generations of learners.
Before the Mass, reflections were shared by former Executive Director of Schools (1997–2005) Dr Anne Benjamin and Western Sydney University Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Geoff Lee.

Dr Benjamin spoke of Greg’s leadership and influence.
“Greg was not frightened by a big idea or new ideas, “reflected Dr Benjamin.
“He had a vision for learning and teaching that challenged many. His vision was based on research, experience and conviction, and that undergirded his persistence. He wrote about it, spoke about, acted on it, and pursued it.
“And in the process, I believe, brought about generational change in the approach to learning and teaching, not just here in Parramatta, not just in the Catholic sector, but much further afield. His contribution is well documented and recognised.”
Professor Lee reflected on Greg’s contribution to education and his partnership with the university.
“Over many years, we worked together through some tough times. Trying to influence the government where we could,” Professor Lee said.
“I remember him to be a larger-than-life character… Greg helped me understand the local community’s needs and the critical role of the Catholic Schools.”
Representatives from more than 70 schools were in attendance, joined by principals, teachers, clergy and colleagues who worked closely with Greg throughout his long and distinguished career of almost 50 years.

Members of Greg’s family, including his wife Sue and their daughters Alexandra and Sophie, were present and warmly acknowledged during the service. Prayers of thanksgiving and the Homily delivered by Bishop Vincent reflected Greg’s visionary leadership, his passion for student-centred learning, and his enduring impact on school communities across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains.
The Mass was a powerful reminder of Greg Whitby’s influence as an educator and leader whose work helped shape the future of Catholic education. His legacy, many noted, will continue to inspire staff and students for years to come.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
