This year, Sacred Heart Parish, Luddenham-Warragamba, celebrated a heart-warming sign of growth: a new group of 14 junior altar servers has joined its liturgical community.

Together with their existing junior servers, the parish now has 19 children faithfully assisting at Mass – one of the largest groups the parish has seen in recent years.

The new servers were installed across two of the parish’s churches – with 10 installed at Holy Family Church, Luddenham, and four at Sacred Heart Church, Warragamba.

Their installation Masses were moments of hope, marked by the enthusiastic support of families and parishioners.

Acts of generosity have added a deeply personal touch to this year’s group. One parishioner lovingly stitched and resized new robes, ensuring each child could be vested with dignity.

Another family also hand-crafted the small wooden crosses the children wear – a symbol of both their commitment and the community that forms them.

Supported by experienced servers, the children are learning the reverence and responsibility that come with serving at the altar.

Parish Priest Fr Shinto Francis said that at the beginning of the sacramental program, children were invited to consider becoming altar servers once they had completed their preparation.

“Throughout the program, they began to familiarise themselves with what it means to serve at the altar, and many of them grew to love the idea,” he said.

“After their First Holy Communion, a large number volunteered; some even encouraged their older siblings to join. That’s why we’ve had such a wonderful response.”

Their eagerness has been a source of joy for the parish, and many parishioners have expressed how uplifting it is to see more young people participating so actively in liturgical life.

“It’s great to see the little ones taking on responsibility at Mass,” one parishioner said. “What a great idea! They’re serving and learning at the same time. It helps them grow in their faith – and it helps all of us pray.”

The installation of new altar servers aligns with the Diocesan Pastoral Plan priorities of Formation, Community and Mission, and the objectives to be a Church that is Inclusive and Welcoming, and a Listening Church.
