CathWest Innovation College transformed a workshop into sacred space for a special Mass celebrating Saint Joseph, the patron saint of workers, celebrated by Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv.

The Mass, celebrated at the McCarthy campus in Emu Plains, reflected the College’s unique integration of trade, innovation and Catholic identity. With students physically building the altar and preparing the sacred space for Mass inside the College’s ‘Brick & Block’ workshop, the liturgy became a powerful expression of the students’ identity and faith in action.

Principal Paul Stenning reflected on the example of St Joseph and the connection between faith and skilled labour.

“Jesus was a tradie,” Mr Stenning said. ”Before Jesus was a craftsman he was an apprentice to a carpenter, St Joseph. Just like the disciples, the students of CathWest prepared the workshop by building the altar and setting the table for the celebration of the Eucharist.”

School captains from both the McCarthy and Loyola campuses also highlighted St Joseph the Worker as a model of humility and service.

“At CathWest, we strive to be the hands of Christ through thoughts, words and actions, inspired by Saint Joseph the Worker,” said Loyola Campus School Captain Lizzy.

In his Homily, Bishop Vincent reflected on St Joseph’s quiet courage, humility and life of service, encouraging the community to follow his example in supporting and caring for others.

“Let us learn from Joseph, the quiet achiever,” Bishop Vincent said. “Let us use the opportunities we have to grow our ability to serve, develop our character, make a difference and enhance the lives of others.”

A significant moment of the celebration was the blessing of two St Joseph the Worker icons, which will be displayed in the foyers at both CathWest campuses.

Music throughout the celebration reflected the College’s strong vocation and trade focus, including contemporary hymns and a reimagined version of Jimmy Barnes’ ‘Working Class Man’, performed by a band made up of teachers and friends from CathWest as well as Bethany Catholic Primary Glenmore Park.

The Mass was attended by CSPD representatives including the Chief Executive Officer of CSPD, Jack de Groot, the Head of Performance, Angela Hay, and Mission partner Deacon Adrian. Other special guests included Sr Rosalie Ilboudo FMM and College Chaplains, Fr Michael and Fr Renato.

The celebration concluded with a shared barbecue lunch. Bishop Vincent also had an opportunity to visit classrooms, meet with students and even learn more about their work in building a Mars Rover.

This joyful celebration of faith and trade was a fitting celebration for the patron saint of workers, St Joseph.
