Catholic secondary schools in the Diocese of Parramatta are leading the way in championing a new initiative from the St Vincent de Paul Society NSW, designed to deepen students’ engagement with service and social justice.
The Vinnies Service Medallion (VSM), officially launched this year across New South Wales, recognises students in Years 7 to 12 for their contributions to community service, leadership, fundraising and advocacy. The free program gives students the chance to earn a formal award while living out Gospel values in practical ways.
Schools in the Diocese of Parramatta were part of the successful 18-month pilot, including St Clare’s Catholic High School, Hassall Grove, and Cerdon College, Merrylands. These schools have already seen the positive impact of the program, which encourages student-led initiatives and complements existing leadership and service programs.
“Our Catholic schools are places where students are formed not just academically, but as people of compassion and action,” said Jack de Groot, CEO of Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese.
“The Vinnies Service Medallion allows students to connect with real community needs in a structured but flexible way, and to be recognised for the difference they make.”
From preparing food hampers and toiletry kits, to volunteering in Vinnies shops or raising funds for winter appeals, students across the Diocese have taken up the challenge with enthusiasm. Many have also participated in advocacy projects that help amplify the voices of those experiencing disadvantage.
“The program empowers students to put their faith into action and reflect on how they can contribute to a more just society,” said Joy Kyriacou, Director of Programs at the St Vincent de Paul Society NSW.
“It’s about recognising the strengths of young people and giving them opportunities to serve that are meaningful and lasting.”
As the program expands in 2025, more Catholic schools in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains are expected to join, further embedding a culture of service and solidarity in the life of the Diocese.
