On the evening of March 28, the tranquil grounds of the Mount Schoenstatt Shrine and Retreat Centre in Mulgoa warmly welcomed pilgrims for 24 Hours for the Lord, a global Lenten initiative introduced by Pope Francis in 2014.

This year’s event held particular significance, as it was celebrated during the Year of Jubilee. The motto for this year’s event, “You are my hope” (Psalm 71:5), invited participants to reflect on the mercy and renewal that the sacrament of reconciliation brings.

From 6pm on the Friday, the shrine opened its doors for an uninterrupted 24-hour vigil.

The event began with Holy Mass celebrated by Fr Pawel Barszczewski OP at 6pm on the Friday evening, after which Confession was offered for a couple of hours. Several groups took responsibility for praying and offering appropriate texts for reflection at various times throughout the 24 hours. Adoration continued during the night with a few people braving the crisper night air.

Pilgrims were encouraged to commit to an hour with the Lord and His Mother, participating in quiet reflection, prayer, and reconciliation.

As the night deepened, the peaceful atmosphere of the shrine offered a perfect backdrop for the faithful to experience the mercy of God. Light support was available for those seeking spiritual counsel, as they sought renewal through the sacrament of reconciliation.

The event culminated with Mass at 5pm on Saturday, with many receiving a Jubilee Indulgence for their pilgrimage, given the Schoenstatt Shrine is one of three official pilgrimage sites in the Diocese of Parramatta.

“Around 50 people attended both Masses, while many pilgrims took the opportunity to pray throughout the night and day,” shared Sr. M. Elizabeth Foley, a Shoenstatt Sister.

After Mass, there was an opportunity for fellowship in the Pilgrims’ Centre.

“The hot soup and buns were very much appreciated,” Sr M. Elizabeth shared.

“Many thanks to the organisers and volunteers who made this initiative once again possible.”

This powerful and moving experience helped participants encounter God’s loving mercy, reaffirming Pope Francis’ message of hope and reconciliation during this Jubilee Year.
