As the U.S. Presidential election looms, the “culture wars” that play out in political battles over education, access to abortion, trans rights, and the nature of truth appear to be as entrenched as ever.
But the jousting isn’t just between Christian conservatives and secular liberals. The culture wars have also opened deep rifts within Christian communities themselves.
Philosopher and author James K. A. Smith has been examining how the culture wars play out at the granular level — within congregations, within families — even within the hearts of individuals.
Smith says that people in Christian communities have come to over-identify with what they know and believe.
