The parish community of Baulkham Hills gathered in a spirit of celebration and reflection recently for the launch of Parish Priest Fr Joseph Lam’s ninth book, Saint Augustine on Listening, Humility and Unity: The Augustinian Root of Pope Leo XIV.
Approximately 70 guests attended the event on 26 March, representing not only the host parish of Baulkham Hills but also from Father Joseph’s previous parish communities of Glenbrook and Strathfield. The gathering reflected a shared appreciation for theological scholarship and a deep interest in the enduring relevance of St Augustine’s thought in the life of the Church today.
Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv, Bishop of Parramatta, also attended the evening and formally launched the book. In his address, Bishop Vincent highlighted the importance of returning to the wisdom of the early Church Fathers, particularly in a contemporary context marked by division and noise. He commended Fr Joseph’s work as both timely and pastorally significant.

The audience was first introduced to the book by Sister Dr Margaret Ghosn, Principal of the Maronite College of the Holy Family, Harris Park. Dr Ghosn offered a thoughtful and engaging overview, drawing attention to the central themes of listening, humility, and unity, and how these virtues – so deeply rooted in the writings of St Augustine of Hippo – continue to shape the Church’s mission today. She also commended Father Joseph for contributing an outstanding work on the life of St Augustine, which will be a much welcomed and valuable addition to the already rich and vast collection of works commemorating his life.
Fr Joseph’s latest work explores the theological and spiritual insights of St Augustine, presenting them as foundational to understanding the pastoral vision of Pope Leo XIV. In doing so, the book invites readers to rediscover the transformative power of attentive listening, authentic humility, and ecclesial unity in both personal faith and communal life.
The evening was marked not only by intellectual engagement but also by a strong sense of community. Guests had the opportunity to meet Fr Joseph, discuss the themes of the book, and share in light refreshments following the formal proceedings.
This latest publication stands as a testament to both Fr Joseph Lam’s lived experience as a follower of the teachings of St. Augustine, as well as an ongoing contribution to theological reflection within the Diocese of Parramatta and beyond, offering readers a rich resource for Lenten reflection and for the continued renewal of the Church in our time.
Saint Augustine on Listening, Humility and Unity: The Augustinian Root of Pope Leo XIV is available for purchase for $35 through the parish office at St Michael’s, Baulkham Hills.
