Franciscans from across the Diocese and beyond gathered in a spirit of joy and fraternity to welcome the Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor, Br Massimo Fusarelli in Waverley, during his recent visit to Australia – in a rare and encouraging opportunity to hear directly from the 121st successor of St Francis of Assisi.

Sr Pia Galea OSC, a Poor Clare Sister from Richmond was among many Franciscan community members and associates – Catholic and Anglican – across NSW who came together for the occasion on 17 February 2026. The group, called ‘Cords Connecting’ meet around four times a year. Sr Pia said the atmosphere was warm and prayerful, with religious and lay Franciscans alike gathering to listen, share, and be renewed in their common calling.

A Seed for Eternal Life

Br Massimo was accompanied by Br John Wong, Definitor General for the Asia-Oceania region. Together, they spoke about the recent international Franciscan document, Francis: A Seed for Eternal Life.

The document, signed by leaders of Franciscan Orders, has been shared with communities around the world.

Guests who attended the visit were especially moved by the document’s closing challenge: “The seed of Francis continues to germinate. It is up to us to make it bear fruit.” The message resonated deeply with those present, encouraging a renewed commitment to Gospel simplicity, fraternity, and service to those on the margins.

During the visit, a Franciscan icon of the Season of Creation written by Melbourne-based Franciscan, Sr Mary Burke FMM, provided the perfect backdrop to the occasion. The display was admired by Br Massimo, who expressed his appreciation for this visible sign of devotion and identity.

A Special Year of St Francis

The encounter was made even more significant by the timing of the visit, which aligns with a special year dedicated to St Francis – reflecting renewed energy in living out the saint’s legacy today.

The visit aligns with the Diocesan Pastoral Plan priority of Community and our objective to be a Church renewed in spirit and prayer. Visit Synodality to learn more.
